AI Overviews and GEO: How to Get Your Brand Cited by ChatGPT and Google AI

A growing share of searches now end inside an AI-generated answer instead of a list of blue links. Getting cited inside that answer — on Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Bing Copilot — takes a related but distinct discipline people are calling GEO, Generative Engine Optimization.

How AI answer engines actually pick sources

AI Overviews and chat-based search tools work from a retrieval step before they ever generate a word — they pull a shortlist of pages that already rank well and appear topically authoritative, then synthesize an answer from passages within them. That means classic SEO fundamentals (crawlable pages, real authority, clear topical relevance) are still the entry ticket. GEO is what happens on top of that: making the specific passages inside your page easy to lift out and cite.

Make your content genuinely citable

AI systems favor content structured around clear, self-contained answers rather than long, meandering build-ups. A few concrete habits move the needle:

  • Answer the core question directly in the first two or three sentences of a section, before adding nuance.
  • Define terms explicitly instead of assuming context — "Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how long a page takes to visibly respond to a click" is more citable than a sentence that only implies the definition.
  • Use descriptive H2/H3 headings that read like the question someone would actually type.
  • Include original data, a clear point of view, or specific numbers where you genuinely have them — AI systems, like search engines, reward the source that says something the fifty other pages on the topic don't.

Technical access matters as much as content quality

None of this helps if the AI crawler can't reach your page. Check that your robots.txt isn't blocking the crawlers behind these systems (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended, among others), and that your core content renders in the initial HTML rather than depending entirely on client-side JavaScript — some AI crawlers, like some traditional search bots, don't reliably execute JS the way a browser does.

Structured data still helps machines understand you

Organization, Article, and BreadcrumbList schema give any system reading your page — human search engine, AI crawler, or LLM — an unambiguous, structured summary of who you are and what the page covers. It's not a guarantee of citation, but it removes ambiguity that could otherwise work against you.

"GEO doesn't replace SEO — it's what you layer on top of a page that was already earning its ranking honestly."

What GEO can't do for you

There's no reliable way to force a citation, no dashboard that guarantees an AI Overview mention, and no shortcut around building genuine topical authority. Treat GEO as an optimization layer on solid content and technical SEO, not a replacement for either.
